Nikhil Desai and Nicola Muriuki were delighted to represent JMiles & Co. at the launch of an ESG report for Kenya (prepared by the team at JMiles & Co. on behalf of FSD Africa for the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining) at the Capital Club, Nairobi on 16 October 2019.
The report sets out international environment, social and governance (ESG) requirements; essentially a guide for Kenyan companies on how to access the large pool of international financing which requires ESG compliance. It identifies both international and Kenyan standards relevant to environment, social and governance reporting, and highlights the gaps in the Kenyan legislation/regulation/guidelines.
The launch consisted of a roundtable discussion chaired by Brian Muriuki, Ministry of Petroleum & Mining Advisor, with opening remarks from Peter Estlin, the Rt Hon Lord Mayor of the City of London, H.E Jane Marriott, British High Commissioner to Kenya, Andrew Kamau, Principal Secretary (Petroleum), Ministry of Petroleum and Mining, Mark Napier, Director, FSD Africa, and Ibukun Adebayo, Head of Emerging Markets, London Stock Exchange Group. Key issues discussed were the future of ESG reporting in Kenya, the benefits of sustainable financing and the opportunities for Kenyan companies to access international finance, and be at the forefront of innovation and sustainable business.
