Announcing the JMiles, Anjarwalla & Khanna and ALN Academy workshop and breakfast meeting 24-25 July 2018

June 2018

JMiles & Co., Anjarwalla & Khanna and ALN Academy cordially invite you to our Arbitration workshop event on 24 July 2018 at the Sankara Hotel in Nairobi and breakfast meeting on 25 July 2018 at the same venue. The workshop will provide a dynamic, interactive and technical session, exploring some of the key emerging issues in the Arbitration scene across Africa.

Our stellar list of guest speakers shall range from executive members of some Africa’s most successful Arbitral centres, senior members of the judiciary, established expert practitioners, all of whom have in their own right contributed greatly to the discourse in this specialist area.  We are pleased that Dr Selim of the Cairo Regional Centre will give the key note address.

With Africa’s steady increase in energy and infra-structural development and cross border commercial activity, increases in the incidents of disputes are inevitable. Arbitration has and continues to play a huge role as a dispute resolution mechanism for such activities. In this context many African countries are questioning the efficacy and legitimacy of foreign arbitration centres settling their ‘domestic affairs’. Notwithstanding the merits or de-merits of this apparent challenge to the status quo, it is plain that it does not negate the continued relevance that arbitration has within the various African jurisdictions. Moreover, the challenge arguably highlights the need to accelerate the enhancement of arbitral centres across Africa in terms of process design and implementation, the raising of profile and the execution of service. For countries such as Kenya that seek to put forward their jurisdictions as viable arbitration centres, clear commitment is needed that demonstrates the scaling up of specialist expertise in this field. This journey is well underway across the regions with positive examples of best practice fast emerging. We believe that it is imperative that the broader community of specialists operating in this important field, support these capacity building efforts.

We are pleased to announce that we have an additional Breakfast Meeting Event on 25 July that will focus on digital solutions for Arbitral Institutions and Practice sponsored by Microsoft.
