Nikhil Desai and Laura Lusiji led high level discussions on the legal regime surrounding beneficial ownership information in Kenya, at a meeting organized by the Transparency International – Kenya, on 31 August 2017. This meeting was as a consequence of a questionnaire filled out by Nikhil and Laura, in conjunction with Transparency International, in relation to whether Kenya meets the criteria set out in the G20 high level beneficial ownership transparency principles. Nikhil and Laura engaged with various stakeholders in both the Government and private sectors on what the laws in Kenya provided for in terms of disclosure of beneficial ownership, and what more could be done to align these laws with international best practice. The meeting was well attended with representatives from the Office of the Attorney General, the Kenya Revenue Authority, the Capital Markets Authority, the Financial Reporting Centre, the Kenya Human Rights Commission, FIDA-Kenya, the Kenya Association of Manufacturers, the Kenya Private Sector Alliance, the International Commission of Jurists, the Companies Registry, amongst others.
